THE COLD AIR BIT AT their skin as the world came streaming into place on swirls of green nature magic. They had arrived at the historic site of Finlaggan or, as far as Gordy could tell, close enough given his sense of direction. He tugged on the zipper of his black jacket and pulled it up to his neck as everything around them stabilized while Niles took a moment to adjust himself and focus.

They had landed on a large patch of grass that appeared muddy from the wintery onslaught of rain surrounded by some of the best views he had ever seen in his twenty-something years of life. A large body of water stood before them with a hump of dry land creating an island shortly past the shoreline. It looked magical, it looked steeped in history. Near the water’s edge, a square stone marker rose from the ground about two feet as a plaque of information sat upon it under a reflective covering that was unreadable from their position.

As he turned, he noticed what appeared to be the remains of a building at the far end of the peninsula-like landmass they had traveled to with a long wooden walkway further back leading across to the mainland from its center. In the distance, he could make out a large modern building and specks of other homes. Around them, several collections of ancient stonework seemed to yawn at the sunless sky hinting at their ancestry and willpower to remain upright.

“I’m thinking we’ve arrived?” he questioned.

“Yeah, just past the water there to the little round island,” Niles answered pointing.

“Doesn’t seem like anything is over there but more grass and soggy land,” he commented as Niles began plucking blades of grass from the ground at their feet before moving to a small shrub near the stone marker and snapping off a few of its leaves.

“That’s the way it’s supposed to look. You know how things work when it comes to magic.”

He enthusiastically shook his head. “This I got to see. You ready?”

Niles nodded and moved to the shoreline as he followed behind him. Taking a moment to look around the area, he blinked against the misty rain for any sign of norms wandering about that would notice either of them. The cold and wet would keep most of them away, the magical wards placed around the property through the years an additional deterrent.

He watched as Niles moved his foot forward almost touching the icy water of the loch. Tapping it twice on the muddy bank, he raised his hand and waved it side to side. Tendrils of green magic chased after his fingertips before spiraling and swirled through the currents of air.

“Revelare,” Niles spoke.

A small wooden walkway manifested near his foot. As his magic enacted its presence, it collectively formed a path right to the island through wisps of glowing power. Seconds later, much to his amazement, a home appeared. It would have normally been a pleasant sight to behold, if not for the home looking rather run-down and dilapidated.
